The Making of Machrihanish Dunes
Course's architect, head greenkeeper jump environmental hurdles to help create a natural gem
Golfdom
Just inside the seaside dunes in this speck of a town on the Mull of Kintyre in southwestern Scotland, a golf course is coming to life. To say it is being "built" is somewhat misleading. It's more as if Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club is being unfurled or, perhaps, revealed.

A Stately Honor
Royal Birkdale's raw beauty tests the best in The Open Championship
Golfdom
When the british open returned to royal birkdale this month for the first time in a decade and the ninth time in all, history favored an American or Australian champion. Only golfers from those two countries have ever held the Claret Jug aloft at the magnificent links layout on the coast of Lancashire, England. Names such as Arnold Palmer in 1961, Peter Thomson in 1954 and 1965, Johnny Miller in 1976 and Tom Watson in 1983 alternated with relative outsiders such as Australian Ian Baker-Finch in 1991 and Mark O'Meara in 1998, the last time the event was played at Royal Birkdale.

Overseer of Oporto
No one knows Portuguese course better than head greenkeeper Jose Granja
Golfdom
As resort golf expands across Portugal with the majority of courses in the Algarve and Lisbon regions catering to tourists from places such as Great Britain, Scandinavia and Italy, Jose Granja does what he has been doing for nearly 50 years — working at Oporto Golf Club, Portugal's only links golf course, located about 20 kilometers south of Porto. For almost 16 years, he has been head greenkeeper — doing his best to bring back top-quality turf, which is out of sight and mind for most vacationers.
BIGGA Impresses
An American superintendent in England reports on his first experience of 'Harrogate Week'
Golfdom
For the past 10 years, I've attended the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America's (GCSAA) annual conference, now called the Golf Industry Show (GIS), and have been rather comfortable with the ways things operate, both on the trade-show floor and with the overall atmosphere. That said, I really wasn't sure what to expect when I attended the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association's (BIGGA) British Turf Management Exhibition (BTME) show in Harrogate, England, in January. What I found, however, was both surprising and refreshing.
